Part I: The Brand

1.1Orientation

The Land Cruiser is Toyota's longest-serving nameplate: seventy-five years in continuous production since the Toyota BJ of 1951. By the close of March 2026 the ledger stood near 12.4 million vehicles across more than 190 countries and territories, the Lexus LX and GX counted among them. The name carried Toyota out into the world before the Corolla or the Crown had left home waters; the first exports sailed in the mid-1950s, the Middle East among their first destinations, and by 1965 the Land Cruiser was the best-selling Toyota in the United States. Simon Humphries, Toyota's Chief Branding Officer, put the matter plainly at the 2023 premiere of the current Prado generation: this was the vehicle that put Toyota on the map.

Its standing rests on one working premise, unchanged in seven decades: go out, and come back. On that promise it became the default machine of the Australian outback, of African medical and relief columns, of Gulf desert crossings, of mine sites on every continent and stations at both poles; a 40 Series was among the first vehicles to work in Antarctica. In most places a breakdown is an inconvenience. In the country the Land Cruiser was built for, it is a survival problem, and the engineering has always been done with that arithmetic in mind.

1.2The Four Series

The Land Cruiser is not one vehicle but a family, and the family is one tree. The trunk is the Heavy-Duty line, unbroken from the 1951 Toyota BJ to the 70 still in production. Two lines branched from it, and the order of birth matters: the Station Wagon first, raised in the 1960s on the 40's own hardware, then the Prado, raised in 1985 from the 70's light-duty frames. The fourth line, the FJ, is kin of a different sort, inspired by the 40 and descended from no Land Cruiser. Since 2026 there are four:

Heavy-Duty

The 70 Series (Heavy-Duty) is the trunk: the working truck, in an unbroken line from the original Toyota BJ, with solid axles, plain mechanicals, and a production run of forty-two years and counting. It hauls ore in the Pilbara, vaccines in the Sahel, and most cargo in between.

Station Wagon

The Station Wagon series (Flagship) is the trunk's first derivative, a wagon body raised on the 40's own chassis in 1963 and grown into the technology bearer: from the FJ45V through the 55, 60, 80, 100, and 200 to the present 300. Each generation has carried the line's newest equipment first, and since 1996 it has doubled as the foundation of the Lexus LX.

Prado

The Prado series (Light Duty) is the second derivative, raised from the 70's lighter frames in 1985, given the Prado name in 1990, and grown into one of the best-selling body-on-frame vehicles on earth. With the current 250, the factory names the Prado line the core Land Cruiser: the center of the marque, walked back deliberately from years of soft living to the plain, sturdy tool it began as.

FJ

The FJ series is the newcomer and a different animal (not to be confused with the FJ Cruiser of 2006 to 2022; see section 6.2): a compact five-seater introduced in Japan in May 2026 under the concept "Freedom & Joy" (the factory's phrase, and the source of the name). It carries the spirit of the 40 and none of the family's platforms: its reinforced frame is borrowed from the Hilux/IMV family, and it is smaller, simpler, and pitched at first vehicles and light travel rather than fleets. It stands to the family as inspiration rather than descent: the first true addition in the nameplate's history.

Part II: The Heavy-Duty Lineage

Toyota BJ 20/30 40 70

This is the original bloodline, and the trunk of the family tree: the utility trucks that established the name and still define it wherever a vehicle is a tool rather than a possession. Both of the family's true derivatives were raised from its hardware, the Station Wagon from the 40 and the Prado from the 70. The line began as a rejected military prototype, survived on police contracts, and became Toyota's first export success of any size. Its 40 Series stands among the most recognizable machines ever built, in the company of the Willys Jeep and the first Land Rover, and its 70 Series successor has now been in production longer than the 40 ever was: forty-two years and counting. The customers are the demanding kind: mining companies, armies, the UN and the Red Cross, pastoral stations, and desert country where the old line holds that only a Land Cruiser or a camel will carry you over the dunes. Simplicity is the product. When the factory finally revised the 70 in 2023, its owners had spent years asking that nothing be changed, and the revision obliged: powertrain, safety equipment, and little else.

2.1Toyota Jeep BJ / FJ (1951 to 1955)

The origin story runs through failure, and through a country with almost nothing to spare. In 1951 Japan was still under occupation, its industry rationed and its roads ruined, and Toyota, close to bankruptcy the year before, needed government work to survive. The National Police Reserve trial for a light 4x4 was that work, and the Toyota Jeep BJ lost it to the Willys-licensed Mitsubishi Jeep. What saved the program was a demonstration in place of a contract: in July 1951 test driver Ichiro Taira took a BJ up Mount Fuji to the sixth station, some 2,700 metres, higher than any vehicle had climbed, and the National Police Agency took the truck on as a patrol car. Police money kept the line alive; fewer than 300 were built in the early years, all for government fleets.

The name came in June 1954, when technical director Hanji Umehara coined "Land Cruiser" as a straight answer to the Land Rover; a complaint over the "Jeep" name had made the rebadging urgent as well as ambitious. The engineering was ordinary on paper, a ladder frame, leaf springs, a truck six, and that was the insight: nothing on the BJ needed a specialist to fix, and in 1951 Japan there were no specialists to be had. The working brief the BJ set down, go anywhere and return safely, has governed every Land Cruiser since. A late FJ prototype carried in the F-type engine that would serve the next two decades.

Variants

Only one mechanical family existed; the BJ prefix marks the Type B engine (a petrol six at this date, despite the letter's later diesel associations), and the single FJ prototype of 1955 was the transition unit to the 20 Series.

In service

The BJ's service record is a government ledger: police patrol, forestry, and utility fleets, fewer than 300 trucks in the early years, worked without ceremony. Survival was never the plan, and survivors are museum pieces almost by definition; the Land Cruiser Heritage Museum's collection opens with a 1953 Toyota Jeep BJT. The verdict that mattered was institutional rather than mechanical. The police kept paying, and in the Japan of 1951 that was the only endorsement with money behind it.

Why it matters

Every Land Cruiser trait traces here: the government-fleet customer, the repairability-first engineering, and the habit of proving capability by demonstration rather than argument. The truck that lost its only competition became the longest-serving nameplate its maker owns.

2.220 / 30 Series (1955 to 1960)

The 20 was the Land Cruiser's civilian debut, and the answer to a strategic problem rather than an engineering one. Japan's postwar recovery ran on exports, and Toyota had nothing the world wanted except toughness; the passenger cars were not yet competitive abroad, and the company knew it. So the 20 took the BJ's frame, softened the lines, made the cab habitable, fitted the new F-type six, and went looking for the places British and American trucks were failing. It found them. The first exports sailed in the mid-1950s; in the Middle East, distributor Abdul Latif Jameel's early orders seeded what became the marque's defining market. In 1958 the Australian contractor Thiess brought FJ25s onto the Snowy Mountains Hydro-Electric Scheme after British trucks failed in the terrain, and the order laid the foundation of the Land Cruiser's most devoted national following. The United States took exactly one sale in 1958. Within seven years the Land Cruiser would be the best-selling Toyota in the country, and the 20 is why the dealers existed to sell it.

The truck itself asked little: no low range at first, just gearing short enough to climb without it, and softer spring rates than the BJ so a farmer could stand to drive one all day.

In service

The 20 was bought to be consumed, and mostly was; the Snowy Mountains FJ25s were worked through the scheme's construction years, and the early export trucks fared the same wherever they landed. What the service years recorded is the pattern the marque still trades on: the drivers came back asking for more, and the fleets that tried one ordered others. The verdict was renewal. By 1957 exports had grown from the first year's 98 vehicles to 2,502 across 47 countries, and every truck in that count was sold on the report of an earlier one.

Why it matters

The 20 built the routes the 40 would drive down. Nearly every market where the Land Cruiser is now institutional, the Gulf, Australia, Latin America, was opened in these five years by a truck whose only argument was that it kept running.

2.340 Series (1960 to 1984)

The icon, and the beneficiary of good timing ruthlessly exploited. The 40 arrived in 1960 as the developing world was building roads, mines, and farms at postwar pace, and it offered exactly what that work needed: a short, simple truck that a village mechanic could keep alive forever. Twenty-four years of Japanese production followed, more than a million units, and a reputation that made Toyota's name abroad before the Corolla existed. By 1965 it was the best-selling Toyota in America. In Australia and East Africa it became the fleet default. In Colombia the long-nosed FJ43 became so much a fixture of coffee-country life that it amounts to a national artifact.

The 1973 and 1979 oil shocks bent the line's history: fuel cost turned export demand toward the H and B diesels almost overnight, and the compression-ignition 40s became the standard equipment of every operation that bought fuel by the drum. North America never received them, nor the four-door wagon, which is why it remains the hungriest import market for both today. The classic market found it through the 2010s, and its face is quoted deliberately by the modern FJ series and the 250's "1958" grade. When the 40 finally ended in 1984, it did not really stop; Brazil kept building its descendant for another seventeen years.

Variants

The 40 set down the code system the heavy-duty line still uses: the number gives wheelbase and body, the prefix gives the engine. Petrol F-family trucks served the Americas and the Gulf; the H and B diesels went everywhere fuel was dear.

The 40's service record is the reputation itself. It was the fleet default of East Africa and Australia and the farm truck of three continents, kept alive by the village mechanics it was designed for, and the length of its working life became the marque's calling card; Brazil's assembly line found the design still fit for duty seventeen years after Japan retired it. The used market closed the ledger emphatically: sound FJ40s climbed from work-truck money to the head of the classic-truck auctions, and Colombia's restored FJ43s cross borders at collector prices.

Why it matters

The 40 is the vehicle on which the promise became a reputation. It taught three continents that the badge meant coming home, created the collector market that now funds the marque's mythology, and drew the face that Toyota still reaches for whenever it wants to signal what a Land Cruiser is.

2.470 Series (1984 to Present)

The 70 replaced the 40 in 1984 with a brief that sounds simple and is not: change nothing that matters to a fleet buyer, and improve everything else. It has now been in production longer than the 40 ever was, has outlived two planned retirements, and has served two exiles from its home market; Japan dropped it in 2004, brought it back for one oversubscribed anniversary year in 2014, then reinstated it for good in November 2023. It remains the standing choice wherever failure is expensive. The UN and the ICRC standardized on it, and that decision shaped the truck as much as any engineer did: aid procurement wants naturally aspirated engines that tolerate bad fuel, mechanical injection a field workshop can service, and parts common across a continent, which is a precise description of the 1HZ diesel that powered the fleets for three decades. In the Pilbara and the pastoral country the 76 wagon, the 78 Troop Carrier, and the 79 pickup are closer to civic infrastructure than to consumer goods.

The record includes war. In Chad in 1987, in the conflict remembered as the Toyota War, gun-carrying 70s ran down armored columns, and the truck has been standard irregular equipment in hard places since; it is part of the vehicle's history and is recorded here as such. The 2023 revision added a modern 2.8 diesel, an automatic, and current safety equipment, and changed as little else as could be managed. Its owners had demanded exactly that restraint, and got it.

Variants

Four decades of engines on one truck. The diesel succession, 3B and 2H to 1HZ to 1VD to 1GD, tracks the fleet priorities: torque, simplicity, and fuel that can be had anywhere. The petrol line served the Gulf and Latin America, where fuel is cheap and dust is hard on turbochargers.

The 70's ledger is the marque's cleanest. The UN and the ICRC have specified it for decades, which is a procurement record rather than a sentiment, and fleet buyers re-order the same truck by the dozen because the previous dozen did not stop. What broke, mostly, was the plan to retire it; Japan's 2004 withdrawal was reversed by demand, twice. Australia supplied the pricing verdict. Used V8 79s traded above their original list prices for years, Toyota Australia publicly warned against the price gouging, and the order books were paused repeatedly from 2022 with documented waits beyond twelve months.

Why it matters

The 70 is proof that a vehicle can be a public utility. Aid logistics, mining, pastoral economies, and armies on several continents planned around its availability for four decades, and when its maker tried twice to retire it, its customers declined on the world's behalf.

Part III: The Station Wagon Lineage (Flagship)

The flagship line is the trunk's first derivative, born of the 40's own hardware, and it answers a question the 40 never asked: what if the truck that could go anywhere were also somewhere worth sitting? It began half by accident, a four-door wagon body on the 40 chassis in 1963, became a deliberate product with the 55 in 1967, and then carried out one of the longest upmarket climbs in the industry without once giving up the ladder frame. Along the way it produced the 80, by common consent the definitive expedition wagon; took the Middle East so completely that the 200 and 300 serve as formal dress from Riyadh to Amman; founded the Lexus LX in 1996; and won the production classes of the Dakar for years on end. Each generation carries the line's newest equipment first; that is the job. The customers went from farmers to families to heads of state. The job description never moved.

3.155 Series (1967 to 1980)

The 55 exists because American dealers asked for it. The FJ45V wagon of 1963 had sold out its short run to buyers nobody had planned for, families who wanted the badge's toughness under a roof with four doors, and the dealers wanted a real product, styled on purpose, in volume. The 55 was Toyota's answer and its first Land Cruiser drawn from a clean sheet as family transport: a long, strange, faintly cheerful body that buyers called the Moose and the faithful still call the Iron Pig, sitting on running gear a 40 owner would recognize bolt for bolt. That combination was the point. It let a Utah rancher or a Queensland grazier carry the family on Sunday in the same machine that worked the property all week, and it made the 55 the quiet founder of everything the flagship line became.

It also taught the line its first hard lesson. The 55 rusted with real commitment, quarter panels first, and consumed most of its own production run; the sound survivors are collector pieces now, valued precisely because so few came through. The lesson about corrosion protection was learned in time for the 60, which is part of why so many 60s still exist to be loved.

What service wrote on the 55 is mostly the corrosion report the story above carries: quarter panels first, then everything, until survival itself became the distinction. The record's other half is mechanical. The running gear was the 40's, bolt for bolt, and it rarely failed before the body dissolved around it, so the survivors that exist are sound machines in scarce shells. The nicknames are their own verdict. A wagon that earns two of them, the Moose and the Iron Pig, was being worked, and remembered, with affection.

Why it matters

The 55 discovered the flagship line's customer: the household that wants the working truck's credibility without its manners. Every wagon since has been a better answer to the question the 55 asked first.

3.260 Series (1980 to 1990)

The 60 exists because two customers wanted opposite things and Toyota declined to choose. The fleets that lived on the 40 and 55 wanted nothing changed: leaf springs, solid axles, engines a bush mechanic could rebuild against a mud wall. The families now following those fleets into the interior wanted air conditioning, a radio, seats that forgave a full day, and an automatic. So the 60 kept the old chassis faith beneath a wider, quieter body and let the equipment list do the persuading. It was a conservative machine even in 1980, and that was the point; the fleets signed off, and the families came.

What followed made the reputation. In East Africa the 60 became the safari operator's standard, the shape in every photograph from a decade of Serengeti mornings. In Australia it carried the first great wave of family desert touring: the Birdsville Track and the Tanami with the rear seat folded and jerry cans on the roof, country that had belonged to trucks now open to households. The oil-shock diesels did the pulling; the 2H six asked little, and the 12H-T turbodiesel of 1985, the line's first factory turbo, finally gave the wagon highway legs without surrendering the compression-ignition economics that African and Australian distance demanded. America, petrol-only, got the 2F and later the fuel-injected 3F-E in the 1988 FJ62 facelift, paired with an automatic as standard because that is what America was asking for.

The 60 is the hinge of the wagon line: the last flagship on leaf springs, the first sold on comfort.

In service

The 60 inherited the 55's enemy in milder form, and the community record keeps a stable inspection list for it: roof gutters, rockers, rear quarters, tailgate. Survivors sort by that list more than by mileage. The mechanical ledger is short; the 2H asked little and gave steady service, and the drivetrain's 40-series conservatism meant the engines were rarely the reason a 60 left the road. The market has issued its verdict in public: sound examples bring multiples of their original price, and the high-roof HJ61 turbodiesel stands at the head of the import trade.

Why it matters

Every flagship since has repeated the 60's bargain: change nothing the fleets rely on, add everything the families ask for, and let the badge carry both. The 80 perfected the formula, but the 60 wrote it.

3.380 Series (1990 to 1997)

The great leap, and for many the greatest Land Cruiser outright. The problem the 80 solved was physics: leaf springs locate an axle cheaply, but they fight it, and by the late 1980s the wagon's buyers were covering distances where the fight told. Coil springs at all four corners changed what the same solid axles could do; they let the wheels drop into holes and climb over stone while the body stayed level and the passengers stayed civil, which is why a triple-locked 80 could cross the Simpson in the morning and do the school run the same week without apology. Full-time four-wheel drive and factory lockers front and rear completed a machine with no direct rival: as capable as anything sold and comfortable enough to cross a continent in a day.

The world noticed. The 80 became the standard white truck of UN missions from Cambodia to the Balkans, the archetype of the expedition vehicle, and the machine on which modern overlanding was largely built. It also opened two doors the line still uses: in 1995 Team ACP took production-class 80s to the Dakar, beginning the works production-category program that continues today, and in 1996 the LX450, an FZJ80 in evening dress, founded the Lexus flagship line.

In service

Three decades of hard use have left the 80's ledger long and mostly favorable. The engines are its pride: the 1FZ-FE and the 1HD family routinely pass half a million kilometres, which is why so many 80s are on their second or third continent. The debit entries are well documented. Early 1FZ head gaskets, 1992 to 1995 above all, failed often enough that the repair has its own literature, and the front axle's knuckle service, a greasy afternoon the community treats as a rite of ownership, is the standing tax the solid-axle design collects. The white 80 stayed the standard truck of UN missions for the length of the run, and the triple-locked HDJ81 VX Limited remains the expedition donor of record.

Why it matters

The 80 is the proof that capability and comfort were never actually in tension; they were an engineering budget waiting to be spent properly. 3.4100 and 105 Series (1998 to 2007)

One nameplate, two philosophies, sold side by side for a decade, because Toyota's customers had genuinely diverged. The American and Gulf buyers who now paid for the flagship wanted a V8, precise steering, and highway composure; the fleets of Australia, Africa, and the Middle East wanted the 80's live front axle and would not be argued out of it. The 100 served the first group: independent front suspension, rack-and-pinion steering, and the 2UZ-FE, the model's first V8, a combination bought with a known cost in axle articulation and paid deliberately for what it returned in control. The 105 served the second, keeping the 80's solid-front chassis under near-identical panels; it is the last live-axle wagon Land Cruiser, and the fleets that specified it are the reason it exists at all.

The split worked. The 100 carried the Dakar production-class program into its winning era and gave the LX470 its hydraulic-suspension formula, while the 105 hauled tourists across the Kimberley and aid across the Sahel exactly as its buyers intended. Between them they mark the moment the flagship line formally became two ideas wearing one body, an argument the 300 and the 70 are still having today.

In service

The decade split the ledger the way it split the chassis. The 100's record is dominated by the 2UZ-FE, which proved as unstressed in service as on paper and made high mileage ordinary; the recurring nuisance is the front driveline's clunk, a noise with its own diagnostic literature in the community record, chased through differential mounts, hub splines, and propeller shafts, and by now part of the model's identity. The 105's record is the fleets' verdict repeated: the 1HZ and the solid front axle did what they had always done, and when production ended, the operators who had specified them moved to the 76 rather than to the 200. Both records say the split was honest.

Why it matters

The 100/105 split is the clearest statement in the catalogue of who the Land Cruiser serves: two customers with opposite definitions of progress, both kept. Honoring the divide cost a decade of parallel production, and the marque has never since tried to argue either customer out of existence.

3.5200 Series (2007 to 2021)

The 200 carried the flagship through fourteen years on one settled formula, a V8 and a ladder frame, and spent those years quietly changing what capability meant. Its real project was electronic: KDSS hydraulically linked the stabilizer bars so the same wagon could corner flat on tarmac and let its axles stretch off it; Crawl Control walked the truck down descents no throttle foot could manage; Multi-Terrain Select mapped traction logic to surfaces. The 200 was the argument that software belongs in the dirt, made a decade before the industry agreed, and it is why the truck never needed the front and rear lockers its ancestors carried: the electronics were doing the lockers' job well enough for its buyers.

Its markets used it three different ways. America ran the 5.7 petrol alone and treated the truck as a family heirloom in waiting; Australia took the twin-turbo diesel in such numbers that the 200 GXL became the national tow rig, dragging vans up the Stuart Highway every winter; the Gulf wore the 200 like a good suit. In its Dakar years the production-class program racked wins through the 200 era, the streak the 300 would extend. When American sales closed with the 2021 Heritage Edition, ending a 63-year unbroken run, the used market's answer was an early reading of the demand that shaped the 250's return.

In service

Fourteen years in service settled the 200's one open question, whether electronics could be trusted in the dirt, and settled it by adoption: the systems it introduced are now standard equipment across the class, which is the field's way of ratifying a design. Australia ran the hardest private trial the market offers, the caravan decades, and answered with volume; the diesel GXL held its standing as the national tow rig for the model's whole run. The closing entry is the loudest. When American sales ended in 2021, used 200s traded past their original list prices, demand outliving the product in public.

Why it matters

The 200 settled a question the industry was still asking: whether electronics belong in serious off-road work. Every terrain-management system now taken for granted on this class of vehicle matured on the 200 first, and the demand its ending revealed is why the flagship's American story did not stay closed.

3.6300 Series (2021 to Present)

Mass was the enemy. Fourteen years of the 200 had added equipment, sound insulation, and weight, and the 300's brief was to keep the frame, keep the size, and give back 200 kilograms, because weight is what breaks trucks in dunes and drinks fuel on the Gibb River Road. The new GA-F platform delivered it: some 200 kg lighter at the same footprint, twin-turbo sixes in place of the V8s making more power on less fuel, ten speeds throughout. The GR Sport went further, with electronically disconnecting stabilizers (E-KDSS) and front and rear lockers, the most capable flagship hardware since the 80 and a direct product of the Dakar program; Team Land Cruiser took the 300 to the production-class win in its debut era and ran the streak to twelve straight before the renamed Stock class finally went elsewhere in 2026. Toyota marked the twelfth with a Rally Raid edition of the 300 in Japan, built to the Dakar crew's specification.

Demand outran supply from the first day; Japan suspended orders repeatedly and quoted waits in years. North America passed on the 300 altogether in favor of the Lexus LX600 and, from 2024, the LX700h hybrid, leaving it the rare flagship never sold new in the United States, a gap the 250 was designed to fill from below.

The 300's service record is young and consists mostly of queues. Japan suspended orders repeatedly and quoted waits in years, and the Gulf and Australia absorbed everything built. The only long-form durability evidence this early comes from the Dakar, where the production-class program carried its streak through the 300 era to twelve straight wins; the civilian ledger stays open, as a five-year-old truck's should.

Why it matters

The 300 is the flagship line arguing with its own success: proof that the answer to a heavy, over-equipped truck is not less truck but better structure. Losing weight without losing the frame is the hardest trick in this class, and the 300 is the current best demonstration of it.

Part IV: The Prado Lineage (Light Duty)

The Prado line is the trunk's second derivative, the younger of the two: raised from the 70's light-duty frames in 1985 as the working truck's civilized counterpart, and grown into the volume heart of the marque. Its formula, honest ladder-frame capability at a size and price a household can carry, made it one of the best-selling body-on-frame vehicles in the world: the perennial head of Australia's large-SUV table, a fixture across Asia, Africa, Europe, and Latin America, and the platform beneath both the Lexus GX and the FJ Cruiser. Yet for four decades it was invisible in the United States, sold there only in disguise. That ended in 2024, when the 250 returned the plain "Land Cruiser" name to North America and the factory named the Prado line the core Land Cruiser: the center of the marque, walked back deliberately from the luxury drift of its later generations to the plain, sturdy tool it began as. In most markets the Prado badge retired with that repositioning. The lineage did not.

4.170 Series Light-Duty and Prado 70 (1985 to 1996)

The line's origin is a badge experiment born of a demographic fact: by the mid-1980s the people buying 4x4s in Japan, Europe, and suburban Australia were not fleets, and the heavy 70 punished them for it. In 1985 the factory split the new 70 into heavy and light frames, selling the lighter truck as the Bundera in Australia and the Land Cruiser II in Europe and Japan: shorter, coil-sprung at the rear, powered by four-cylinder engines out of the Hilux stores, and priced where a household could reach it. The compromise was honest; the light truck gave up payload and took back ride, and its buyers understood the trade because it was the trade they wanted.

In April 1990 the restyled four-door versions took a new name, Prado, Spanish for meadow, and found a public the workhorse never had: private buyers who wanted the badge's credibility without its manners. The 1KZ-TE turbodiesel of 1993 gave the line its first modern engine, quiet and quick enough for the motorway commute that was now half the job description. The sales case was made so quickly that a dedicated platform was approved, and the modern mid-size Land Cruiser begins here, in a truck most markets have forgotten.

In service

The light-duty experiment's service record centers on one grievance. The 2L-T and 2L-TE fours cracked cylinder heads often enough to earn a standing reputation, thermal fatigue in a casting with little metal between the valves, and the community record treats a replacement head as part of an early truck's biography; later revisions of the head largely closed the case. The rest of the ledger is quiet. The 1KZ-TE arrived too late in this body to write much here, and the survivors are scarce enough that the Bundera, the registries' first coil-sprung Toyota 4WD, is now remembered more often than encountered.

Why it matters

Every Prado since, and therefore the current core Land Cruiser, descends from this experiment in giving up nothing visible and everything the fleets valued. It found the customer who now buys most Land Cruisers.

4.290 Series (1996 to 2002)

The first clean-sheet Prado, and the point at which the line stopped borrowing and started designing. The 70-derived Prado had proven the customer existed; the 90 was built for that customer from the frame up, on a platform shared with the Hilux Surf and 4Runner, with the line's first independent front suspension and rack steering. The engineering argument for IFS in this class is simple and the 90 made it early: a wagon that spends five days of seven on pavement should steer like it, and the customer who needs a live front axle already owns a 70. Three- and five-door bodies and four engines gave the range reach from Japanese suburbs to African fleet work.

Europe took it as the sensible Land Cruiser and bought it in numbers the heavy trucks never saw; Australia made it a family staple and the tow vehicle of the caravan boom's first act; the three-door 90 gave Japan a compact off-roader with the full badge. The United States never saw it at all, though Americans were driving its near cousin in the third-generation 4Runner, an irony the 250 would take three decades to resolve.

In service

The 90's ledger divides by fuel. The petrol engines, the 3RZ four and the 5VZ six, gave the unremarkable service they were designed for and enter the record mainly as background. The 1KZ-TE is the marked entry: early engines cracked cylinder heads, between the valves and around the pre-chambers, usually with overheating in the chain of events, and the community record has the trouble receding on engines built near the turn of the century. The standing survived the grievance. Europe and Australia kept buying, and the caravan trade's first act ran substantially on the 90.

Why it matters

The 90 is where the Prado became a world car with its own engineering identity rather than a 70 in soft clothes. Its IFS decision, controversial with the faithful and correct for its customer, is the line's defining choice and the 250 still lives with it.

4.3120 Series (2002 to 2009)

Styled at Toyota's European studio ED2 and engineered to read a class above its price, the 120 turned the Prado from a sound regional seller into a world car, and quietly into an engineering leader. KDSS, the hydraulic stabilizer-linking system, appeared on this platform in 2004 before the flagship had it, a small marker of where the line's center of gravity had moved; the volume, the customers, and now the new ideas were on the Prado side of the house.

The 120 also finally reached North America, twice and in disguise. The Lexus GX470 put a V8 version in American showrooms from 2002, and the FJ Cruiser of 2006 dressed a shortened 120 frame in FJ40 costume and sold more than 200,000 in the United States alone, proof that the appetite the plain Prado was never offered to was real all along. Everywhere else it simply did the family work: Chinese production began at Chengdu, Colombian assembly served the Andes, and the common-rail 1KD-FTV made the diesel Prado the default European and Australian tow car of its decade.

In service

Service found the 120's weak point in the fuel system. The 1KD-FTV's injectors, sealed on copper seats the design asked too much of, failed early and often enough to build their own literature, and the worst case, a leaking injector burning through a piston, gave the grievance real weight; the community record dates the worst of it to the mid-2000s engines. Around that entry the ledger is strong. The 1GR petrol six ran without a signature complaint, and the diesel 120 held its place as the default European and Australian tow car of its decade regardless, which is what a market does when the arithmetic still favors the truck.

Why it matters

The 120 is where the Prado stopped following the flagship and started leading it, and where the American market's appetite for this truck was proven twice over under other names. The 250's US arrival is the 120's unfinished business, completed.

4.4150 Series (2009 to 2024; continuing in select markets)

The 150 is the generation that made the Prado line arguably the world's dominant body-on-frame wagon, and it did it by being the vehicle an entire way of life was planned around. In Australia, where "Prado" became the common word for the family tow-and-touring vehicle, the annual migration north, caravans up the Bruce and the Stuart to Cape York winter, ran substantially on 150s; the wagon led the large-SUV sales table year on year for most of its life and waiting lists earned their own nickname, the Prado tax. Across Africa, the Middle East, and Central Asia it did the same work in different dress, the vehicle of ministries, contractors, and families who needed one machine for two worlds.

Fifteen years and two major facelifts absorbed two transitions without losing the fleet standing that underwrote it all: the diesel handover from the 1KD to the 2.8-litre 1GD in 2015, and safety equipment, with TSS standard from the 2017 facelift. It carried the Lexus GX460 for fourteen years in North America. The factory's own account of the 250 as a correction is a comment on the 150's course; each facelift moved further upmarket, and the sales success made the drift easy to miss until Toyota named it.

The 150's record holds the strongest sales verdict in the catalogue and one formally adjudicated grievance. The verdict: a decade and a half at or near the head of Australia's large-SUV table, waiting lists long enough to earn their own name, and a fleet presence that treated the model as standing equipment. The grievance reached a courtroom. The diesel particulate filters of the 2015 to 2020 1GD diesels, the Prado among three model lines and roughly 264,000 vehicles, were found defective by Australia's Federal Court in a class action; a 2020 field fix addressed the hardware, and the damages were argued up the appellate ladder. The market kept buying while the case ran, which is its own entry.

Why it matters

The 150 proved the Prado could carry an entire market's way of traveling on its back, and its very success is why the 250 exists in the form it does: a course correction is only necessary when the ship is large enough to matter.

4.5250 Series (2024 to Present)

The current Prado generation and, by the factory's designation, the core Land Cruiser. Development ran under Akio Toyoda's directive of Genten Kaiki, back to the origin, and the working phrase "back to the basics": the assignment was to reverse the luxury drift and rebuild the line as the plain, sturdy vehicle its customers depend on. The engineering answer was structural. The 250 moved onto the flagship's GA-F platform, a frame 50 percent stiffer and a body 30 percent stiffer than the 150, because stiffness is what makes a simple suspension work well, and simplicity was the brief. The Stabilizer Disconnect Mechanism is the idea in miniature: rather than complex adaptive hardware, a switch that frees the front bar entirely off-road and reconnects it for the drive home, honest capability in place of upholstered capability. The first hybrid and the first electric power steering in any Land Cruiser arrived in the same body, which is the other half of Genten Kaiki: the origin, updated, not reenacted.

It also closed a forty-year absence. North America takes the 250 simply as "Land Cruiser," the nameplate's first return since 2021 and the Prado lineage's first American sale under its own flag, with the heritage-minimal "1958" grade quoting the round-lamp face of the truck that started the US story. Demand at launch echoed the 300's; Japan's First Edition allocation of 8,000 cars went to lottery.

The 250's record is opening rather than written. Launch demand ran past allocation on three continents, Japan's First Edition went to lottery, and the first North American deliveries returned the nameplate to a market that had already priced its absence into used 200s. Verdicts take a decade; the queue is the only one available yet.

Why it matters

The 250 is the marque's clearest self-assessment in decades: a best-seller judged by its own maker to have wandered, and rebuilt on the flagship's bones to earn its keep again. Design language: reliable, timeless, professional; low cowl for terrain visibility, high-mounted lamps above debris, segmented repairable bumpers.

Part V: The FJ Series (2026 to Present)

J240; the first addition, 2026

The fourth series, and the first true addition to the family in the nameplate's history. The Station Wagon and the Prado are true derivatives of the Heavy-Duty trunk; the FJ is not. It is inspiration rather than descent: a compact five-seater that quotes the 40 in spirit, on a reinforced frame drawn from the IMV (Hilux) family, built in Thailand, and pitched at the buyers the rest of the range has priced out or outgrown, under the stated concept of "Freedom & Joy." It is a different flavor of Land Cruiser by design: a dice motif in the panels, factory MOLLE boards and ARB equipment in the catalogue, and a folding electric trail bike, the Land Hopper, planned as a companion. The name tips its hat to the FJ40 and the departed FJ Cruiser; the vehicle shares a platform with neither. The off-road targets state the intent plainly: clearance and approach to match the 250, departure fifteen degrees better, articulation to match the 70.

No service record exists yet. Japanese deliveries began in May 2026, three months before this edition, and the order bank against a base volume of 1,300 units a month is the only field data there is. The page is left open; a record is earned, and the FJ has had a season.

Why it matters

The FJ is the family's first expansion rather than succession, and a bet that the next generation of owners enters through a smaller door. If the 250 is the origin restated, the FJ is the origin re-priced.

Part VI: The Branch Lines

Not everything the family made sits inside a lineage, and not everything that looks like family is. This part holds the branch lines: the Bandeirante, the licensed 40 that Brazil built for forty-three years on another maker's diesel; the FJ Cruiser, a Prado platform wearing the 40's costume for a market that had been offered neither; and the neighbors, the machines close enough to the Land Cruiser to be mistaken for it, or to be it under another badge. None of them belongs to a lineage's line of succession, which is why they hold a part rather than a seat, and each says something about the main lines that the main lines cannot say about themselves: what the design becomes when nobody asks for progress, what the badge is worth when only its shape is for sale, and where the family's edge actually runs.

6.1Bandeirante (Brazil, 1958 to 2001)

Brazil's import-substitution laws turned a Land Cruiser assembly line into a parallel species. From the late 1950s Brazil required vehicles sold there to be built there, with local content rising by law, and importing Toyota diesels was economically impossible; so Toyota do Brasil, which had assembled 40-based trucks since 1958 and localized production by 1962, fitted license-built Mercedes-Benz diesels for more than three decades. The result, named for the bandeirantes, the frontier explorers of the colonial interior, is the only Land Cruiser ever powered by another maker's engine as standard, and one of the purest expressions of what the 40 was for: it changed so little over 43 years that a 2001 truck is recognizably a 1960s design, because its customers, the fazendas, the sugar and cattle country, the interior's contractors, never asked it to change.

It outlived the Japanese 40 by seventeen years, the last 40-derived Land Cruiser built anywhere, and in the Brazilian interior it holds the same folk standing the 40 holds elsewhere: the truck of the grandparents' farm, still working.

In service

Four decades of interior service produced a record with few entries, which was the point. The Mercedes diesels and the 40-series chassis were understood by every mechanic in the sugar and cattle country, and the trucks stayed in work across generations of owners; the fazendas ran them until nothing remained, which is its own kind of verdict. The record's recurring note is continuity itself: a 2001 truck served beside a 1970s truck, doing the same work with most of the same parts, and no other Land Cruiser derivative ever wrote a service record that uniform.

Why it matters

The Bandeirante is the natural experiment: what happens to a Land Cruiser when nobody asks for progress. The answer, forty-three years of steady work and a nation's affection, says as much about the original design as any spec sheet.

6.2FJ Cruiser (2006 to 2022)

A retro homage that became a cult, and a market experiment that proved a thesis. Toyota knew Americans wanted the Prado platform; the plain wagon had never been offered, so the FJ Cruiser dressed a shortened 120 frame in FJ40 costume, white roof, round lamps, wrap-around rear glass, and let nostalgia do the selling. It worked: more than 200,000 sold in the United States before demand thinned, and when the truck left the American market in 2014 it refused to die anywhere else, finding a long second life in the Gulf, where its heat tolerance and simplicity fit the dunes, and in Japan, where a 2018 Final Edition closed the home run. GCC sales carried production to 2022.

The FJ Cruiser's ledger is short on failure and long on market signal. The 1GR and the Prado running gear under the costume gave the durability record of their donor platform, and the recurring complaints in the period record are ergonomic, visibility above all, rather than mechanical. The market wrote the loud entries. American used values inverted the depreciation curve years before the wider classic-truck boom, and the Gulf kept the truck in production for eight years after the United States let it go, a second life very few discontinued models earn.

Why it matters

The FJ Cruiser proved twice over what the 250 later banked on: that the American appetite for the Prado platform was real, and that the 40's face still sells. Its cult is the dress rehearsal for the current heritage era.

6.3What Is and Is Not a Land Cruiser

The Land Cruiser sits inside a wider Toyota truck ecology, and several neighbors are close enough to confuse, or to serve as Land Cruisers in all but name in markets that never received the real article.

4Runner / Hilux Surf. The closest thing the US had to a Prado for decades. The 4Runner has shared platforms and running gear with the Prado line generation after generation: the third-generation 4Runner (N180) and Prado 90 are siblings, the fourth (N210) parallels the 120 era with heavy component overlap, the fifth (N280) evolved from the same architecture, and the sixth (N400, 2024) sits on the same TNGA-F platform as the 250 and GX550. Calling the 4Runner a US-market Prado analog is broadly accurate at the platform level, though bodies, tuning, and market positioning always differed.

Lexus LX and GX. Luxury twins of the Station Wagon and Prado lines respectively; each is covered in its donor generation's section (LX450/470/570/600/700h under the 80/100/200/300; GX470/460/550 under the 120/150/250).

Tundra, Sequoia, Tacoma. Since 2021 to 2024 these North American trucks share the TNGA GA-F platform family with the 300, 250, GX, and LX, along with the V35A twin-turbo V6 and i-Force Max hybrid systems. Platform cousins, not Land Cruisers.

Hilux / Fortuner / IMV family. Toyota's other global work-truck line, historically separate from the Land Cruiser. The boundary blurred in 2026: the Land Cruiser FJ rides on a reinforced IMV-derived frame, the first Land Cruiser to do so.

Mega Cruiser (BXD20, 1995 to 2001). Japan's Hummer-scaled 4x4 with the 15B-FTE diesel and four-wheel steering. Despite the name, not a Land Cruiser.

Blizzard, RAV4, Land Cruiser-badged conversions. The Blizzard was a rebadged Daihatsu; the RAV4 shares nothing but the showroom. Fire, ambulance, and utility conversions on 40/70 chassis are genuine Land Cruisers and follow their donor codes.

The country, the territories, the hands, the keepers

A Land Cruiser's specifications were written in Aichi; its reputation was written elsewhere, by country that does not negotiate. This part holds that record in four movements. First the terrain: the landscapes and events that shaped the machine and the legend, and that explain more about why the trucks are built the way they are than any engineering document. Then the territories: the markets whose commerce, institutions, and vocabulary grew around the truck. Then the hands: the engineers and the plants that made the machines. Last the keepers: the institutions that keep the old trucks alive and the record straight.

7.1The Outback

Australia is the 70's largest market and the whole marque's proving ground of record, and the relationship began with failure: British trucks dying on the Snowy Mountains Scheme in 1958, and Thiess importing FJ25s to replace them. What the country selects for is specific. Distances are continental, help is days away, heat kills electronics, and corrugations kill everything else, so the Australian spec evolved toward the mining standard that is now its own aesthetic: white paint, steel wheels, snorkel, bullbar, HF aerial whipping over the roof, no options that can fail. The Canning Stock Route, some 1,800 km of dune and well country and the world's loneliest track, became the informal graduation exam for vehicle and traveler alike, and the 60, 80, and 105 each took their turn as its default transport. On the pastoral stations and in the Pilbara iron country the 76, the Troopy, and the 79 are working plant, bought by the dozen and run to mileages that read like typographical errors. When Toyota needed to know if a Land Cruiser was finished, it asked Australia; the market's refusal to release the V8 79 gracefully is only the latest verdict.

7.2The Sahara and the Sahel

Across the desert belt of Africa the Land Cruiser is less a product than a piece of humanitarian infrastructure. The UN agencies, the ICRC, and the NGO fleets standardized on the 70 for reasons that read like a design brief in reverse: the 1HZ diesel is naturally aspirated and mechanically injected, so it tolerates the fuel that actually exists at the end of the supply line and can be serviced by a workshop with hand tools; parts are common from Dakar to Mogadishu; and a white 76 or 78 is recognized at every checkpoint on the continent as what it is. That fleet logic, multiplied over decades, made the 70 the vehicle in which vaccines, food, and medical teams reach roadless country, and it froze the truck's engineering priorities in place; every time Toyota modernized the 70, the aid fleets' requirements were in the room. The desert itself did the durability testing, and the sand-ladder-and-jerry-can silhouette of a loaded Troopy on a Saharan piste is as close as the marque has to a coat of arms.

7.3The Dakar

Toyota has run production-based Land Cruisers at the Dakar since 1995, when Team ACP, later Team Land Cruiser Toyota Auto Body, entered the production category with 80s. The class is the point: not the prototype buggies that win outright, but showroom-derived vehicles, which makes the category a public torture test of the standard product. The program's record is the longest argument in the marque's favor: twelve consecutive production-class victories from 2014 through 2025, carried across the 200 and then the 300, with the rally's move to Saudi Arabia putting the trucks in dune country as severe as any customer's. The streak ended honestly; in 2026, with the category renamed Stock and its rules revised, the win went to a Land Rover Defender, and the team's stated goal is reclaiming the class in 2027. Lessons from the program flow back into the road cars, most visibly in the 300 GR Sport's hardware and the Rally Raid edition built to mark the twelfth win.

7.4The Gulf

The Middle East was among the Land Cruiser's first export destinations and remains its spiritual second home. The relationship is practical at its base, Gulf-spec trucks carry the severest cooling packages Toyota builds, because 50-degree dune work is a normal Tuesday, and cultural at its peak: dune driving is a national sport from the Emirates to Saudi Arabia, and the Land Cruiser is its standard equipment. The 200 and 300 occupy a social position with no Western equivalent, formal dress and family standard at once, while the petrol 70 series, GCC-spec with the V6, does the desert's actual work far from the corniche. The old line that only a Land Cruiser or a camel will carry you over the dunes is repeated in the region with the confidence of people who have tested both. It was Gulf demand, as much as any market's, that pulled the Station Wagon line upmarket across five decades, and Gulf orders that Toyota counts first when a new flagship launches.

7.5Ice

Cold country tests different virtues: starting, sealing, and the behavior of steel at temperatures that make it brittle. Toyota's own retrospective counts a 40 Series among the first vehicles to operate in Antarctica, and the modern polar story runs through Iceland, where the local art of glacier travel produced Arctic Trucks and the 44-inch-tire conversion culture that turns Land Cruisers into high-flotation snow machines; re-geared, body-cut, and running tire pressures measured in fractions, they guide and rescue on Vatnajökull year round. On the polar plateaus themselves the traverse fleets are largely built on the related Hilux platform, chosen for weight, with Land Cruisers serving in support and coastal roles, a precision worth keeping because the ice does not forgive exaggeration and neither should a reference. What the cold work proves is the unglamorous half of the promise: a machine that starts at 40 below and seals against powder snow is a machine whose tolerances were honest all along.

7.6Australia

The Outback's terrain and what it selects for are at 7.1; this is the institution the country built around the truck. A contractor built it before a dealer network existed to sell it: Leslie Thiess secured distribution rights in 1959, the year after his Snowy Mountains FJ25s made the case told at 2.2 and 7.1, and in February 1961 Thiess Sales Pty Ltd was appointed sole importer for Australia and Papua New Guinea; Toyota Australia's own history claims the country as the brand's first official export market through that relationship. What followed is less a market than a vocabulary. GXL entered as a single rung on the 1989 60 and became the country's word for the volume grade of two different trucks; Sahara has named the flagship since 1982; the Prado tax entered the language when the 150's waiting lists outlasted its facelifts; and VFACTS, the industry's official sales reporting, spent most of the 150's life recording the same result at the head of the large-SUV table. The rivalry is Australian property too. The Nissan Patrol, launched in the same year, 1951, has contested the same stations, mines, and fleet tenders for seven decades, and the Codex records the contest as history rather than as a verdict. The market's late entries run in the customer's favor: from 2022 Toyota paused the 70 Series order books repeatedly and publicly warned against above-list price gouging, so a territory that once had to be persuaded to take the truck now has to be rationed.

7.7The Gulf States

The Gulf's terrain and the truck's standing there are at 7.4; this is the commerce underneath them. In 1955, the year the first export shipments left Japan, 98 Land Cruisers bound for 14 countries, Toyota appointed Abdul Latif Jameel its distributor in Saudi Arabia, and the partnership opened with an order of four BJs. By 1957 the count stood at 2,502 vehicles across 47 countries, and the Gulf houses were already the pattern the trade would keep: family distributorships that sold the truck, serviced it, and answered for it, which in desert country is the half of the product a factory cannot ship. The arrangement lasted. Abdul Latif Jameel and Toyota marked seventy years of the partnership in 2025, the nameplate's own anniversary span, and the relationship stands among the first the marque ever signed abroad. The rivalry lives here as it does in Australia: the Nissan Patrol, born in the same year, 1951, has been the region's standing alternative for the whole seven decades, a parallel both marques' own histories record, and this document sets it down as history and keeps no score. What the territory asked of the machine, the severest cooling and the dune-first specification, is written into 7.4 and the grade ladders of 8.4; what it gave the marque came first and lasted longest, the trade itself.

7.8Africa

Africa's half of the story told at 7.2 is the fleets'; this is the trade that supplies them. The aid market runs through a dedicated channel: Toyota Gibraltar Stockholdings holds and supplies 1HZ-powered 70s for the United Nations agencies and NGO programs that specify them, so a fleet order draws on standing stock rather than a factory queue, and the white HZJ78 reaches the field on the timescale of the emergency rather than of the production schedule. Assembly reached the continent too. In Mombasa, Associated Vehicle Assemblers, founded in August 1977, builds Land Cruiser 79 pickups from knock-down kits under Toyota Tsusho and CFAO, roughly 700 a year, one of a handful of places outside Japan where a Land Cruiser is still bolted together. South Africa closes the ledger with a specification: Toyota's current 79 sheet there still lists the 4.2-litre 1HZ, naturally aspirated and mechanically injected, thirty-six years after its introduction, because the continent's fuel, distances, and workshops still ask for exactly that engine. Africa never made the Land Cruiser a status object or a heritage piece. It made the truck a tool and kept it one, and the specification discipline that fleet's demands enforced, plain engines, mechanical injection, parts common from Dakar to Mogadishu, is the discipline every other market's trucks inherited.

7.9Japan

The home market's arc is the strangest in the catalogue: the country that builds the Land Cruiser spent two decades declining to sell its plainest one. The 70 was withdrawn from Japan in 2004; demand declined to accept the ruling. Toyota brought the truck back on August 25, 2014 for a single thirtieth-anniversary year, a van and Japan's first 70 pickup, stating an expectation of 200 orders a month and publishing no cap, and on November 29, 2023 reinstated it for good, one grade, the 2.8 diesel, an automatic, a subscription route through KINTO. The modern range at home is rationed more than it is sold. The 300's order books were suspended repeatedly with waits quoted in years; the 250's First Edition, 8,000 cars on the ZX and VX grades, went to dealer lotteries as the market press recorded it; the Rally Raid 300's twelve vehicles were drawn the same way, by Toyota's own announcement. Japan's relationship with its own truck has thereby inverted the export markets': elsewhere the Land Cruiser is bought as equipment and judged in service, while at home the queue itself is part of the record, and the factory meters what the country that makes the truck is allowed to keep.

7.10North America

The American record is a single unit, a golden age, a long partial absence, and a return. The first United States sale, in 1958, was exactly one vehicle by Toyota's own telling; seven years later the 40 was the best-selling Toyota in the country, and the dealer network it built is the one the Corolla inherited. What America was not offered shaped its appetite as much as what it was. The diesels and the four-door 40 wagon never came, the 40 itself left after 1983, and the Station Wagon line carried the name alone through the 60, 80, 100, and 200, a sixty-three-year run that closed with the 2021 Heritage Edition. The Prado spent those decades present in disguise, sold as the Lexus GX from 2002 and as the FJ Cruiser from 2006, more than 200,000 of the latter, so the appetite for the mid-size truck was proven twice under other names before the 250 returned the plain badge in 2024, its 1958 grade named for the year of that single first sale. The market had already shown its hand: used 200s traded past their original list prices through the absence years, and the 25-year import rule now moves the diesels and 70s America never had into the country as each year's window advances.

7.11Latin America

Latin America took the Land Cruiser as working equipment and has returned it as heritage. Colombia is the deepest relationship: the long-nosed FJ43 became a fixture of coffee-country life and stands now as a national artifact (2.3), and SOFASA's plant at Envigado assembled the 70 Series from the early 1990s and the Prado 90 from 1999 to 2009, so for a time the country's Land Cruisers were its own manufacture. Venezuela built a vocabulary along with its trucks. Assembly at Cumaná began on November 21, 1981 under SERENCA, the first vehicle out the door an FJ60; Toyota de Venezuela, formed in 1992, built the last FJ62 anywhere that same year, two years after Japan retired the 60. The names the country coined, Machito for the 70, Burbuja for the 80, Samurai for the petrol 60, are indexed at 8.6, and they are the surest evidence of adoption a market can leave: a truck earns a local name when it stops being foreign. Brazil ran the region's longest experiment, the forty-three-year Bandeirante, told at 6.1. The collector trade now runs the film backward: restored FJ43s cross borders at prices the farms that wore them out would not recognize, and the region that received the marque's plainest trucks now exports their legend.

7.12Russia and the CIS

The shortest essay, and the only one that ends. Russia and the CIS took the flagship in its fullest forms through the 100, 200, and 300 eras, by preference the petrol V8s in the 200's years, with the Prado alongside as the volume seller; for a quarter century the market columns of this document's variant tables carry the territory beside the United States and the Gulf. The end came as policy rather than product. Toyota suspended vehicle imports and St Petersburg production in March 2022 and ended Russian manufacturing that September; the plant, which built the Camry and RAV4 and never a Land Cruiser, transferred to the state institute NAMI on March 31, 2023. The Land Cruiser's departure was therefore the import halt alone, no plant closed because none existed to close, and the trucks already in the country work on without their maker. The record stops there, mid-sentence, which is its own kind of entry.

7.13The Hands

The machines fill this document; before this page, its engineering credits ran to two names, an engineer and a test driver, both from 1951. The imbalance mirrors the sources rather than the story. Toyota kept its engineers largely off the record for most of the nameplate's life, and only around the seventieth anniversary did the company publish a usable share of their history, in Global Newsroom biographies, the 75-year corporate history, and above all the Toyota Times interview series. What follows is drawn from those materials and stops where they stop. Five chief engineers are documented by name in Toyota's English record; a complete generation-by-generation succession has never been published, and the gaps are left as gaps rather than filled from weaker sources. The people appear here for one reason, the same one that governs every entry in the catalogue: their decisions explain the machines. A benchmark chosen two generations back explains a mass target; a coachbuilder's seventy-year tenure explains why the wagons read as one refined idea; a brief written as a single phrase explains a suspension.

The chief engineers: the five documented names

Hanji Umehara opens the succession. The technical director had watched the truck lose its only competition, the National Police Reserve trial that went to the Willys-licensed Mitsubishi Jeep, and the program he carried through the police-contract years sold fewer than 300 vehicles in its early life, all to government fleets. His two recorded decisions bracket the job. In June 1954 he coined the name Land Cruiser, answering the Land Rover with a complaint over the Jeep name forcing the issue (2.1 tells the story), and the Toyota Times series preserves his principle: that a vehicle without confidence built into it will never earn a customer's trust. The series keeps a second demonstration beside the famous one, his team driving a Land Cruiser up the stone steps of Mount Fudo in zigzag, restaging on tires a feat of horseback legend, because proof by demonstration was already the house's native argument. Beside him stands the other founding trade, the test driver's. Ichiro Taira's July 1951 climb to Mount Fuji's sixth station won the truck by demonstration what it had lost in the trials, and the division of labor the two men set, engineering that promises and proof that pays, has governed the program since.

Sadayoshi Koyari is the succession's long middle. He joined Toyota in 1985, became the Land Cruiser's chief engineer in 2007, and has carried the 70 and the Prado since; Toyota's own materials call him Mr. Land Cruiser. His fieldwork is dated in the interviews: assigned to the Land Cruiser in 2001, he was sent to the Middle East to meet the customers themselves, and watched the trucks working 900-kilometre desert runs in heat past 50 degrees, sustaining livelihoods from the coast to the mountains. The census he brought back reads like this catalogue's own index, Saudi distance drivers, Gulf fishing crews, police fleets, tour operators, and the aid organizations of ungraded Africa. The interviews record a method rather than a personality: QDR, quality, durability, and reliability, held as the line's non-negotiable center, and genchi genbutsu, going to the place itself, practiced as fieldwork in the deserts and mine country where the trucks actually serve. His tenure spans the modern 70's returns, the 2014 anniversary year and the 2023 reinstatement, and the Prado's climb through the 150's sales decade into the 250's correction; the catalogue those years produced is the method's record. Its plainest single evidence is the 70's 2023 revision, powertrain and safety equipment and little else, restraint practiced as engineering policy for a customer who had spent years asking that nothing be changed.

Takami Yokoo authored the 300, and came to it the same way, joining Toyota in 2000, moving to Land Cruiser development in 2014, and driving outback legs of Toyota's Five Continents Drive Project through washboard corrugations, dust storms, and stream crossings; the requirement he brought home he gives in the customers' own terms, to go everywhere and come back safe. Project general manager of the ZJ program from 2019, he set the new flagship's benchmark two generations back rather than one: "We actually used the Land Cruiser 80 as a guidepost," he told the development press, with the stated goal of surpassing the 80's rough-road performance. Toyota's public materials set the floor lower, asking the 300 to match or surpass the 200; the higher bar belongs to the development interviews, and it is the one the hardware answers. Measuring the 300 against the wagon many hold to be the definitive Land Cruiser, rather than against the truck it replaced, is why the brief was mass, why the GA-F platform gave back some 200 kilograms, and why the GR Sport carries locker hardware the flagship had not fitted since the 80's own era.

The interviews also record how the office proves a truck before a customer can. The house method is breakdown testing, driving past every numerical standard to the point of failure so that the failure is met in Aichi rather than in the Sahel, and the 300's development logged more than one million kilometres of durability running, twenty-five times around the globe by Toyota's own arithmetic, with the harshest impact runs made driverless because they would throw a human from the seat. Yokoo states the mission in commercial terms rather than engineering ones: keeping the promises the market has already been sold.

Keita Moritsu carried the 250, and the directive above him is on the record too: development ran under Akio Toyoda's Genten Kaiki, back to the origin (4.5). Moritsu's Toyota USA biography records the global chief engineer's chair for body-on-frame vehicles from 2023, and his assignment was unusual in the succession: subtraction, reversing a best-seller's luxury drift without spending the capability that justified the price. The 250's plainest decisions read as that brief executed rather than interpreted, a stiffer frame carrying a simpler suspension, a stabilizer that disconnects instead of adapting, a low cowl for terrain visibility, lamps mounted above debris, and bumpers segmented to be repaired rather than replaced.

Masaya Uchiyama holds the newest pen. Named at the FJ's October 2025 premiere as its chief engineer, he is on record that the new series has no United States or European plans, a scoping decision as deliberate as any engineering one: the FJ is aimed at the markets that enter the family through a smaller door. His brief survives in its own targets, a chief engineer's sentence written in degrees: clearance and approach to match the 250, departure fifteen better, articulation to match the 70 (Part V). Five names, then, across seventy-five years, with the earlier generations' authors unnamed in Toyota's English materials; where an attribution rests on secondary or forum-grade sources, this document does not carry it.

One plant, one coachbuilder: Yoshiwara

Nearly every wagon in this catalogue was bodied by one lineage of coachbuilder and built at one works, a continuity no series section can tell because it belongs to all of them. The coachbuilder was founded in 1947 as Arakawa Bankin Kogyo, Arakawa Sheet Metal Works, and its Toyota work predates the truck: the 75-year history records Arakawa building Model SA passenger-car prototypes from May 1947, in the postwar division of labor that had Toyota make the chassis and coachbuilders make and mount the bodies. The BJ of 1951 was born into that arrangement, its bodies assembled and painted by Arakawa from the first trucks on, when the program was fewer than 300 vehicles and a police contract. The company became Arakawa Auto Body, then ARACO, and in October 2004 its vehicle business merged into Toyota Auto Body, which holds the work today. The plant is Yoshiwara, in Toyota City, and this document's own plant rows tell the rest: every Station Wagon generation from the 55 to the 300 names it, and the 70 has been built there since its 1984 launch, alongside the Lexus LX and the Coaster today. The arithmetic of the continuity deserves a plain sentence. The program the coachbuilder joined in 1951 was a police contract; the ledger it builds against today stands near 12.4 million vehicles, and the same works has bodied the marque's wagons across the entire distance. Seventy-five years of Land Cruisers, four company names, one works. The continuity has a public face the Codex has already met: Team Land Cruiser Toyota Auto Body, the Dakar production-class program of 7.3, is the coachbuilder racing what it builds, and the twelve-year streak was won by trucks from the same hands that body the customer's.

The Prado's line ran its own route: Tahara built the 90, the 120, and the 150, with Hino's Hamura plant joining for the 150 and sharing the 250 today. The distinction is not trivia. The wagon line's industrial identity, a single works refining one idea for seven decades, and the Prado line's, a volume product built where volume logic dictates, are the marque's two temperaments in factory form, and they match the two customers the catalogue has described all along.

The satellites: assembly abroad

The satellites carried the marque where trade policy or distance demanded local hands. Cumaná, Venezuela, is the satellite that built the last FJ62 anywhere and gave its trucks the local names the Lexicon records (7.11 carries the dates). São Bernardo do Campo, Brazil, ran the longest satellite of all, the Bandeirante of 6.1, forty-three years on Mercedes-Benz and then Toyota diesels. Ovar, Portugal, is the European foothold: Salvador Caetano became Toyota's importer for Portugal in 1968, opened the Ovar plant in 1971 as the first Toyota assembly operation in Europe, has built Land Cruisers among its models across the decades, and today runs an assembly line dedicated to the 70, supplying roughly sixteen European markets, so a new European 70 is a Portuguese-built truck. Mombasa, Kenya, assembles still: Associated Vehicle Assemblers' knock-down line of 79 pickups (7.8 carries the founding and the count). Envigado, Colombia, assembled the 70 and the Prado 90 for SOFASA through the 1990s and 2000s (7.11 carries the dates). Chengdu, China, assembled the Prado through the 120 and 150 eras, to 2020; Hamura carried the FJ Cruiser for its whole 2006 to 2022 run; and the newest satellite is the largest bet, Ban Pho, Thailand, which builds the FJ series entire, the first of the four series to begin its life outside Japan. The map the plants draw is commerce made visible: where the marque could not ship the finished truck, it shipped the work.

The record of the hands is short because Toyota's publishing habits made it so, and this section will grow as the company's record does. What it already shows is the marque's rarest engineering property, which is patience with people: chief engineers measured in decades, a coachbuilder measured in generations, and a working premise, go out and come back, that has passed intact through every pair of hands the record names.

7.14The Custodians

A machine stays in the world because institutions form around it, and the Land Cruiser's are unusually complete: the factory, a museum, and the clubs.

The factory's entry is the GR Heritage Parts program, which reproduces discontinued parts under the GAZOO Racing banner and amounts to Toyota formally underwriting its own history. It opened on August 1, 2021, the nameplate's seventieth anniversary, covering the 40 alone; on January 13, 2023 the program added three series at once, the 60, 70, and 80, with the first reissued parts, rear axle shafts for the 70 and 80, following that April and a request survey opening for the 60. The selection mechanism is the point. Customer requests drive which parts return, so the catalogue is a census of what the world's surviving trucks actually need.

The museum's entry is in Salt Lake City. The Land Cruiser Heritage Museum, founded by Greg Miller, begun at Miller Motorsports Park in Tooele and resident in the city since 2015, describes its holding as the world's most diverse collection of Land Cruisers, with a stated aim of one of every model and well over one hundred machines; the collection runs from a 1953 Toyota Jeep BJT to a 2021 Heritage Edition 200, one end of this document to the other.

The clubs and the forums keep the working memory. The Toyota Land Cruiser Association, founded in January 1976 by Bob Garrett and the Land Cruiser owners of the Oxnard and Ventura country, counts itself by its own history the largest off-highway vehicle organization in the United States, and the online communities hold the marque's accumulated service record: IH8MUD and The Land Cruiser Forum chief among them. Around them runs the restoration economy the 40 and 60 built, the trade that turned farm trucks into auction headliners.

The codes, the engines, the ladders, the lexicon, the sources

The catalogue closes as apparatus: the instruments that decode, index, and answer for everything before them. The decoder at 8.1 reads a chassis code; 8.2 and 8.3 hold the engines and gearboxes behind every variant table; 8.4 records the grade ladders as each market published them, and 8.5 the factory's own numbered occasions; 8.6 keeps the culture's vocabulary and 8.7 the document's own; and 8.8 closes the volume with the sources the whole record is checked against.

8.1Chassis Code Decoder

Format: [Engine prefix] + J + [Series/body number] + [suffixes]. J = Jeep, a holdover from the 1951 Toyota Jeep BJ. The suffix letters are positional, not decorative: a full factory code reads engine family, J, series and wheelbase, steering position, body type, and then the trailing production positions, transmission, grade, engine type, market, and package, in that order. The letters most often sighted in the wild are body-type codes: V (van, hard top, FRP top), P (pickup), C (side-opening rear door), and W (wagon, which modern Japanese-market codes such as GDJ250W still carry). G is a body-type code as well, the luxury wagon, not a grade letter. The full scheme is tabulated below the prefix table. Hybrid models carry the base engine's prefix; the 250 i-Force Max is coded from its T24A engine family with a hybrid identifier in the full model code rather than a distinct letter.

8.2Complete Engine Reference

Every engine fitted to a Land Cruiser or its direct derivatives is indexed in the master table at the foot of this section, with notable applications elsewhere in the Toyota range. The biographies before it carry what a table row cannot: why each family was built, what it enabled, and where it served. The numbers stay in the table.

The founding sixes: Type B, F, 2F

The first Land Cruiser engine was not built for it. The Type B, a 3.4-litre petrol six out of Toyota's truck line, went into the 1951 BJ because it existed, and its virtues were the prototype's whole argument: it climbed Mount Fuji's gravel to the sixth station on torque and patience, and a police mechanic could service it with the tools already on the shelf. The F of 1955 kept the architecture and the philosophy, added displacement, and settled in for twenty years. It is the engine of the export breakthrough: the F pulled the first FJ25s onto the Snowy Mountains Scheme, carried the 40 through its 1965 season as the best-selling Toyota in America, and idled outside the mines and mission stations that made the badge's early reputation. The 2F of 1975 was the same idea enlarged to 4.2 litres and built in numbers that made it industrial plant; Toyota fitted the family to forklifts, which explains its character better than any road test could. The fuel-injected 3F-E of 1988 gave the line a last act in the FJ62 and the first 80s. Petrol sixes of this kind survived longest where fuel was cheap and dust was hostile to complication, the Gulf and Latin America above all, and the family's forty-year run fixed the expectation every later engine inherited: torque first, simplicity always.

The oil-shock fours: B, 3B, 13B-T

The B diesel exists because the price of petrol became a design constraint. The 1973 oil crisis repriced distance in every export market at once, and Toyota's answer in 1974 was a 3.0-litre diesel four that made the BJ40 the rational choice wherever fuel was bought by the drum. Nothing about the B family was ambitious, and that was its qualification: it shared its bones with the Dyna, the Coaster, and the Toyoace, so its parts and its mechanics were already distributed across Asia, Africa, and Latin America before the trucks arrived. The 3B enlargement of 1980 carried the formula into the 60 and then the 70, and for a decade and a half a 3B idling at a border crossing was the sound of the working Land Cruiser on three continents. The family's one flourish came in 1985: the 13B-T of the Japanese-market BJ74, the first factory turbodiesel ever fitted to a Land Cruiser, proof that even the plainest line in the catalogue could be taught to hurry when a home-market buyer asked. The fours never had the sixes' ease and were never meant to. They were the entry ticket to compression ignition, priced and plumbed for the customer whose nearest reliable fuel was a day's drive away.

The heavy diesels: H, 2H, 12H-T

The H family is the engine the distances asked for. The H arrived in 1972 in the HJ45, a 3.6-litre six that brought diesel economics to the long-wheelbase trucks just before the oil crisis made those economics decisive, and its 2H successor of 1980 became the default power of the 60-era wagon wherever petrol thirst disqualified the alternatives: Australia, the Middle East, and the African fleet routes. Like the B fours, the sixes led a double life in the Coaster bus and the Dyna truck, which kept injection pumps and gaskets on shelves from Alice Springs to Nairobi and made the engine's reputation partly a supply-chain achievement. The 12H-T of 1985 is the family's landmark: the first turbodiesel six in a Land Cruiser and the Station Wagon line's first turbo, built for the HJ61 and remembered for what it changed rather than what it measured. It gave the diesel wagon highway pace without surrendering the economy that justified it, and the high-roof HJ61 it powered remains the import connoisseur's pick of the 60 era. The family's reach even touched the 55, whose late HJ56V appeared only where fleets asked. The H line ended where the 1HZ began, in 1990, having done the unglamorous work of proving that a heavy diesel wagon was a category, not a contradiction.

The 1HZ: the engine that became infrastructure

No engine in the catalogue carries more of the marque's meaning than the 1HZ, and none has a plainer specification. A 4.2-litre naturally aspirated six with mechanical injection, introduced in 1990, it was already conservative the day it appeared, and that was the design. It tolerates the fuel that actually exists at the end of a supply line; it can be diagnosed by ear and repaired with hand tools; and its parts are common across a continent. On those three properties the aid world standardized. The UN agencies and NGO fleets specify 1HZ-powered 70s through Toyota Gibraltar Stockholdings, the dedicated supply operation that ships them into the field, and the white HZJ78 has been the vehicle in which vaccines and medical teams reach roadless country for three decades. When the flagship line split in 1998, the 1HZ took the solid-axle half, powering the 105 through a decade of Kimberley touring and Sahel aid work while the 100 went to the V8; when the 105 ended, its buyers moved to the 76, and the engine went with them. The counting continues literally: thirty-six years after introduction the 1HZ remains in production, still listed in Toyota South Africa's current 79 specifications and still powering the Coaster beside it. Every attempt to modernize the 70 has had the fleets' requirements in the room, and their requirement has always been this engine or its equal. It is the purest mechanical expression of the working premise. The 1HZ is slow, and it comes back.

The 1HD family: the private buyer's diesel

The 1HD is what the 1HZ's architecture becomes when the customer is a household rather than a fleet. Turbocharged from birth in the 1990 HDJ80, the 4.2-litre six gave the coil-sprung 80 the pace its comfort promised, and it drew the map of the diesel wagon's private market: Japan, Australia, and Europe, the buyers crossing continents by choice rather than assignment. The 24-valve 1HD-FT of the 1995 facelift and the electronically injected 1HD-FTE of 1999 refined the same case, the FTE serving the 100-series flagship and the 78 and 79 workhorses alike in the markets that would pay for refinement. The family's standing is best read from the used market: the Japanese-market HDJ81 VX Limited, triple-locked and turbodiesel, is the expedition build donor of record, and 1HD-powered trucks routinely pass half a million kilometres in service, which is the fact underneath the prices. When the 100 gave way to the 200 in 2007 the family ended without a successor of its kind; the V8 diesel that followed answered a different question. The 1HD marks the years when the flagship diesel was still recognizably the aid engine's sister, tuned for the family that wanted to go where the fleets went.

The 1FZ-FE: the last petrol inline six

The 1FZ-FE closed the line the Type B opened. Arriving in 1992 with twin cams and electronic injection, the 4.5-litre six was the F family's true heir, and it mattered most in the markets that never went diesel. The United States ran its 80s on the 1FZ-FE alone from 1992 to 1997; the Gulf and Latin America took it in the 70 and later the solid-axle 105, and everywhere it served the logic was the same: fuel was cheap there, and dust is hard on turbochargers, so a big atmospheric six was the honest answer. Durability made the rest of the argument. The 1FZ-FE routinely passes half a million kilometres, which is why so many of its 80s are now on their second or third continent, and in 1996 it founded a dynasty in evening dress, powering the LX450 that opened the Lexus flagship line. Its cost was thirst, accepted knowingly by every buyer it ever had. When the 100 took the flagship to a V8 in 1998, the 1FZ-FE soldiered on in the 105 for the fleets that valued the known over the new, and when it finally retired, no petrol inline six ever entered a Land Cruiser again.

The Prado's diesels: 1KZ, 1KD, 1GD

The light-duty line's diesels tell the marque's modernization in three engines. The apprenticeship was served by the 2L family, the Hilux-shared fours that powered the light-duty 70 from 1985 and gave the first Prado its engine; the 1KZ-TE of 1993 was the first diesel the line could call a destination rather than a hand-me-down. It was the Prado's first modern turbodiesel, and it changed the job description: quiet and quick enough for the motorway commute that was now half the assignment, still a diesel for the weekend's dirt. It carried the 90 era across Europe, Australia, and Asia. The 1KD-FTV that succeeded it from 2000 brought common rail to the line under the D-4D name, and the difference was categorical rather than incremental: electronic injection made the diesel Prado the default European and Australian tow car of its decade. The 1GD-FTV completed the succession in 2015, announced that June with the first use of Toyota's Thermo Swing Wall Insulation, a stated forty-four percent maximum thermal efficiency, and the company's first urea SCR aftertreatment; the Hilux in Thailand took it first, the Prado in Japan weeks later. It is now the working diesel of the whole light-truck range, pulling the 150, the 250 with its 48-volt assistance, the Hilux, the Hiace, and, from 2023, the 70 itself. Displacement fell for four decades while capability rose, and the fleets noticed the parts commonality most, which was the design's quiet point.

The V8 years: 2UZ, 3UR, 1UR

The 100 arrived in 1998 with the flagship's first V8 because its buyers' definition of quality had moved onto the highway. The 2UZ-FE answered them: a 4.7-litre V8, unstressed by design, that served the 100, the early 200, and the LX470, gained variable valve timing in 2005, and built a parallel reputation under the Tundra and Sequoia, which kept American service bays fluent in it. The 5.7-litre 3UR-FE of the American 200, the largest engine ever fitted to a Land Cruiser, and the 4.6-litre 1UR-FE that replaced the 4.7 from 2012 completed the era's range, and the same family carried the Lexus GX through two generations, the 2UZ in the GX470 and the 1UR in the GX460. The V8's constituency was specific: America ran petrol V8s exclusively and treated the 200 as an heirloom in waiting, and the Gulf wore them as standard dress. The era's end was a market verdict in reverse. When the final American 200 closed the 63-year run in 2021, used values went past list price, and the 300 that followed returned the flagship to six cylinders; no petrol V8 has entered the catalogue since. The UZ and UR years mark the interval when the Land Cruiser's severest test was not a desert but a decade of family duty, and the engines were built to lose neither.

The 1VD-FTV: the working V8

The 1VD-FTV is the only V8 Toyota developed for the Land Cruiser's own use, and its two lives say what the family had become by 2007. In the 200 it ran twin turbochargers and did the flagship's work in Australia and Europe, the tow engine of the caravan decades. In the 70 it ran a single turbocharger, detuned toward patience, and became the beating heart of the Australian fleet standard: the V8 79 is the truck the mines and stations order by the dozen, and used examples have traded above their original list prices for years, a standing no product plan predicted. Its exclusivity carries one asterisk, the Lexus LX450d, which took the twin-turbo version into the luxury catalogue; nothing outside the Land Cruiser's own family has ever carried it. The engine's late career answered its own question about succession: when the 2023 revision brought the 2.8-litre four to the 70, the V8 stayed on the Australian order books beside it rather than yielding them, because the market that made the engine institutional declined the retirement. The 1VD is what happens when an engine outgrows its specification and becomes a term of trade: in the Pilbara, "V8" and "79" are one word.

The 1GR-FE: the global petrol six

The 1GR-FE inherited the F's old job: the petrol engine for the places diesel never conquered. A 4.0-litre V6 introduced on the 120 in 2002, it spread with the platform, to the Prado and the GX for the family work, to the FJ Cruiser for the nostalgia trade, to the 200 as the Gulf's base engine, and from 2007 to the 70, where GCC fleets wanted petrol's simplicity in dust that shortens a turbocharger's life. It became the marque's utility engine the way the 2F had been: never the headline, always somewhere in the frame. When Japan brought the 70 back for its thirtieth anniversary in 2014, the twelve-month run was all 1GR, the petrol six carrying the heritage moment. Its siblings in the Tacoma, Tundra, 4Runner, Fortuner, and Hilux kept its parts on shelves across five continents, the same supply-chain logic that once served the B and H diesels. Its four-cylinder understudy, the 2TR-FE, has run even longer, from the 120 era through the 150 and 250 to the new FJ, where it is the sole engine: proof that the founding formula, an unstressed petrol engine asked to outlive its truck, still sells in 2026.

The twin-turbo present: V35A, F33A, T24A

The current generation's engines answer mass, the enemy the 300 was built against. The V35A-FTS, a 3.5-litre twin-turbo petrol V6, and the F33A-FTV, a 3.3-litre twin-turbo diesel V6, replaced the V8s in 2021 with more power on less fuel, which was the whole brief. The petrol also serves the LX and, in related tune, the GX550, Tundra, and Sequoia; the diesel remains Land Cruiser exclusive, the 1VD's only successor in that respect. The T24A-FTS turbo four extends the logic downward on the 250, and in i-Force Max form it is the first hybrid ever fitted to a Land Cruiser, paired there with the line's first electric power steering: the origin updated, not reenacted. What the trio marks is the end of displacement as the family's index of seriousness. For seventy years a bigger Land Cruiser meant a bigger engine; the 300 makes less displacement move more truck, and the fleet half of the catalogue keeps the 1GD and the 1HZ precisely because their virtues never depended on litres either. The engines of 2026 split the old brief cleanly, capability engineered at the top of the range and simplicity preserved at the bottom, which has been the marque's actual settlement all along.

8.4Grade Taxonomy

Grade names are the least stable words in the catalogue. A chassis code names a machine; a grade badge names a market's idea of it, and the same two letters have marked opposite ends of the ladder in different decades. GX badged the Australian 60's flagship Sahara in the early 1980s and badges the working base of the 300 today, which is why no cell below means anything without its market and era attached. The ladders are recorded as each market published them; a ladder absent here is absent because no official publication of it has been verified, not because none existed.

What the recurring words have meant

Sahara has been the Australian flagship word since 1982, long enough that the 300 splits it in two, Sahara and Sahara ZX; the grade and the desert it is named for are separated at 8.6. GXL entered as a single rung on the 1989 60 and became Australian vocabulary, the volume grade of the 70 and the 300 alike. VX has held the upper-middle of the ladder in most markets since the late-1980s 60, and Japan pairs it with ZX at the top of the 300 and 250. AX is Japanese mid-ladder shorthand, and the grade the 70 wore home in 2023. Kakadu crowns the Australian Prado. WorkMate is the Australian fleet floor, vinyl where the others carry carpet. GR Sport, on the 300, is the motorsport-derived crown above the luxury ladder, carrying E-KDSS and both lockers, and it is the basis of the Rally Raid edition in 8.5. The lesson of the table is the inversion: a badge means nothing across borders, and the forum answer that generalizes a grade across markets is wrong by construction.

8.5Special Editions Registry

Units. Dimensions are millimetres and cargo volumes litres. Torque is newton-metres, with pound-feet beside it where a figure was published for the United States. Output is quoted as each market published it, in kW, PS (the metric horsepower), or hp, and a range against one engine means markets diverged: ratings vary with fuel specification and emissions calibration, not with the honesty of either figure. Fuel economy appears only in the certification form its market published, such as km/L under the WLTC.
